nature-young

Marcia Bowden wrote her book, Nature for the Very Young, to help teachers get children outside and use their natural desire to 'explore' to teach some school readiness skills, love of nature, and science! Let's learn with her how we can enjoy the outdoors with our little ones, even if we don't have a forest school available or outdoorsy nature ourselves.

Guide

  • No Lecture
  • Choose vocabulary for the day
  • Generalities are ok
  • Don't forage (children might copy the behavior when you aren't around)

Guide to Make Your Own "Lessons"

  • Use the natural tendency of the child: Touch, Moves, Curious
  • Explore entire habitat - up and down, all around
  • Allow time to observe - choose one aspect to examine
  • Add a readiness skill

"Winter," "Spring," and "Autumn" were inspired by Marcia Bowden's fantastic book "Nature for the Very Young," which you should purchase or take out of the library! It has photocopy-able pages of templates and other games not mentioned here. "Summer," however, features original activities created by our team, unrelated to the Bowden's book. This is not an affiliated or paid endorsement. I think this book is fantastic and have a copy myself! Consider purchasing it at your local bookstore or at least checking it out of the library! I have not been able to contact the author or publishers. If you know them, and wish to let them know that I am supporting them, please do so! I hope to bring this book back into popular demand!
